Today is an important day for elephants. They don’t know it but people are determining their fate today at #CITESCop18. Will Zambia’s elephants be transferred to Appendix II which will allow future trade and export? Will Southern Africa, the last stronghold of these great animals, be allowed to sell ivory despite previous sales fueling the illegal trade? Or will all elephants be moved to Appendix I, affording them the highest level of protection? We know what we’re hoping for in this delicate, difficult time for wildlife. #saynotoivory #whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo

Birds can be an excellent indicator of where to find herds of animals. Egrets and oxpeckers spend their time close to large herbivores, like cape buffalo, taking advantage of the feast of insects that are disturbed by the slow, but steady movement through grass. Seeing flocks in the distance is often a clue of a nearby herd. And even if you have wings to help you to get around, hitching a ride is always an extra energy-saving bonus as well.

Water is life - even for species that have adapted to desert areas. With a climate in flux and rainfall patterns changing, we're likely to see more wildlife moving - or attempting to move with the rain. However with habitats shrinking rapidly, their options are running out. If there is the option of movement during drought, there is the option of survival. Leading conservationists have recommended that we set aside 30% of all habitats by 2030. It's a task that will require dedication but it may ultimately be what saves countless species from extinction - and that includes us as well.

From the painstaking work that unfolds in the editing room to the music that drives the film’s emotion home, this is just a small glimpse at that process – it’s how ‘Okavango: River of Dreams’ came to life. More behind-the-scenes clips to come this week.

When we think of climate change and its impact on wildlife, we often don’t consider species as well adapted to hotter habitats as the African painted dog. But these animals are also sensitive to the changes taking place on our warming planet. Rising average temperatures mean fewer hours in the day are cool enough for the dogs to hunt, impacting their ability to find food and the survival rate of young pups. It’s one more added threat for a species already endangered by habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict and disease. Climate change is here, its impacts are real and far-reaching – and it’s up to us to take action. #endangeredspecies #painteddog

Deep waters can flow strongly and swiftly. For a little elephant, holding on to a tail during a channel crossing may not always be necessary, but it is a welcome comfort. #okavangoriverofdreams #paradise #botswana #thejoyofelephants

The tusks of thousands of elephants burned in Kenya in 2016 - the largest ivory burn to date. These burns are controversial acts against poaching because of the high monetary value of ivory, and while Kenya didn’t expect this to end the poaching, it was sending out a strong message that elephants are worth more alive, and that Kenya was stepping up their war against those who traffic wildlife and wildlife products. Why not sell the ivory and use the money for the conservation of these animals? Well, these tusks are mostly from elephants illegally killed for their ivory which has been confiscated over the years, and Kenya refuses to make money from contraband. Also, ivory released for sale in the past ended up fuelling the demand and there was a sudden and extreme rise in elephant poaching which has cost countries countless more millions than were ever raised. Tanzania lost over half their elephant population in just 5 years. and Africa lost a whopping third of all elephants. Many people don’t know that elephants are killed for their tusks and believe that they fall out naturally. They don’t. Since this burn a number of important things have happened. China has banned the sale of ivory and while there is still illegal trade happening, prices have fallen dramatically and so has elephant poaching. However, in Southern Africa, where the world's last substantial elephant population remains, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe are calling for an end to the ban in trade of raw ivory and are planning to apply for these changes at the next CITES to conference, declaring that the money raised will be used for conservation and anti-poaching. #worldelephantday #worthmorealive #saynotoivory #kenyaivoryburn #whenthebuyingstopsthekillingcantoo

The dominant male of the Tsaro Pride at Duba Plains in the Okavango surveys the wide-open landscape in front of him from an unusual perch. Duba's lions are known for their swimming prowess - essential in their watery environment and a skill that has made them highly muscular and some of the biggest lions to be found. Recently, we've noticed that these innovative lions are increasingly using trees as a vantage point from which to plan a hunt. The lionesses have become rather good at it. This male did not however, manage to descend quite as comfortably as he climbed up. Unlike leopards, lions' ankle joints have not evolved to grip branches - particularly on the way down and he ended up in a highly undignified tumble. This experiment in arboreal use may not have worked out perfectly for him, however seeing these lions constantly pushing their hunting strategies in this difficult ecosystem is promising for the future - a future that is increasingly precarious in a changing climate and shrinking habitat. It's promising because it shows that lions can adapt and learn to use their environment to their advantage. But judging from the fact that there are more statues of lions left in the world than actual lions, we know that we have to do all that we can to help these big cats - no matter how innovative they are. Ten years ago, together with @dereckjoubert, and @NatGeo, we set up the Big Cats Initiative as a long-term effort to halt their decline in the wild. To date, this has supported more than 120 innovative projects in 28 countries, all helping big cats and communities thrive.
